What NOT TO PACK Before You Move

If you’re moving to a new home or relocating your business, having residential or commercial movers here in Salt Lake City, Utah transport your belongings will make things a lot easier for you. As professionals, they should be able to provide you with a comprehensive list of “non-allowables.”

This is an industry term used to refer to items that professional movers will not be able to transport. Some of these items are dangerous goods and should be disposed of properly before the move. There are others, however, that can be moved provided they are packed properly.

To make sure you’re not moving anything that will cause problems, talk to your chosen moving company and ask them about the things you can and cannot move. Be sure to do so before you start preparing items for shipment.

Once you’ve received the list from your movers, packed the items properly and keep them stored safely to avoid any risks or other issues. This is highly important, especially if you’re doing a long-distance move. Some items, such as gasoline and ammunition, are no-brainers.

But there are others like nail polish and chemistry sets for children that may seem harmless but may actually be on the list depending on your movers. Perishable items and sentimental belongings, although not hazardous, may be difficult for some movers to transport as well due to liability.

Perishables

If you’re doing a long-distance move, it’s only natural that mover will refuse to transport perishable food items. Not only will the food not last until they reach the destination, but these could also attract rats and other pests which may cause damage to your property.

For short-distance moves which will be completed within 24 hours, some moving companies may agree to transport perishables if they’re packed properly. These items include frozen food, produce, opened food products, refrigerated food items and even plants, including indoor.

Hazardous materials

Some items that movers consider “hazardous” may sound surprising for you, but the reasons to have them included are definitely valid. One good example would be fertilizers. While these may seem harmless, they can actually turn into highly explosive materials when the right conditions are met.

If you have these types of items, you may consider giving them to friends and families instead. But, if you’re planning to throw them away instead, make sure they are disposed of properly. Different cities and counties have specific rules when it comes to disposing of hazardous items, whether they’re flammable, explosive or corrosive.

Personal items or those with sentimental value

The reason why professional movers choose not to transport these items is because of the inherent risk or damage and loss that comes with them. Movers try their best to limit their liability in case of loss or damage, especially because these items are highly valuable.

As the customer, it’s actually more beneficial for you to have these items in your hand during the move anyway. It can be difficult to ask for replacements of records that contain important personal information such as medical records, school records and financial documents.
